How is territory assigned?

Territory is assigned based on the number of schools and student population in an area. A semi-career Freshman rep will begin with 150-250 schools with room for growth. A territory’s geographic can vary from 1/2 to 1/3 of a large metropolitan area up to a 1/2 dozen or more counties in more rural areas.

Is my territory protected?

Absolutely! You will never compete for territory with another DEE representative. Territory is 100% protected for as long as you are willing to work the territory.

Is overnight or extensive travel involved?

Not typically, although representatives in more rural areas tend to drive farther during the day due to a larger geographic spread.

DEE does, however, offer initial training workshops regionally throughout the year for new freshman representatives. DEE also hosts periodic 1- to 2-day regional booster meetings two to three times each year, as well as an annual 3- to 4-day national conference, where Sales Representatives gather to discuss successes, struggles and strategies and hear exciting news about market trends. Conference locations vary depending on the market. Representatives can earn DEE Travel Dollars throughout the year based on sales production, to help offset travel expenses.

In addition, DEE Sales Representatives may choose to attend state Library Association and other pertinent conferences as a vendor in order to generate leads. DEE will offset all or a portion of related booth expenses.

What does it cost to get started?

What Delaney will provide . . .

There is no start-up fee to receive the materials and information you need to begin selling. DEE will send you 40 or more publishers’ catalogs and samples, as well as a comprehensive company manual for review and ongoing reference. We will also issue you a login and password into our website so you can begin building orders immediately.

DEE will also provide you with detailed school information for your assigned territory, including school and district names, contact names and numbers, market potential indicators and other useful data. Learn more about the training we provide.

What you are responsible for . . .

As an independent contractor, you will set up your own Delaney-compatible home office that includes a home computer with Internet access and a fax machine. We recommend using Internet Explorer with a high-speed connection, when available.

You will also be responsible for printing your own business cards, letterhead, brochures, sales packets, and other materials you may need to do business. Templates and suggestions for each of these items are available on the website. Learn about the minimum requirements for becoming a Sales Representative.

Should I pursue a part-time or full-time career?

We are primarily looking for part-time, or semi-career, sales representatives. Currently, about 80% of our representatives fall into this catagory. However, of the 20% who are pursuing full-time careers, most began at the part-time level and grew their careers into full-time businesses.

Why? As with anything new, it takes time to build a territory and forge relationships; in fact, it has been appropriately observed that ‘it takes 1 year to cycle though DEE’s business’. This means that you’ll spend much of your first year networking and building relationships.

Many new clients want to "test" new sales representatives, as well as DEE, to see how we perform. As relationships grow and trust builds, you can expect orders to grow in both numbers and size – setting the stage for progression into a full-time business. Opportunities will come for additional territory and full-time status as you cycle though the business and begin realizing your own personal successes.

That is why we recommend that you begin this opportunity as a part-time rep. As you enter into your Sophomore and Junior years and realize personal successes, there are opportunities for additional territory and full-time status. With this being said, we did have 3 new reps make $40,000 to $60,000 last year in their first 12 months.

There is a program available for a limited number of qualified freshman representatives. These selected representatives can opt to receive minimal advances for a brief period of time based on performance. These individuals will be required to fill out weekly reports and work less independently while under this program. It is designed not as a salary, but rather to help a representative enter the business who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford a straight commission position.
